Street photographer Harvey Stein discussed his latest MTSU exhibition with students Thursday night.

Harlem Street Portraits, Stein’s third MTSU exhibition, is currently on display in MTSU’s Baldwin Photographic Gallery.

By using a 21mm Laika film camera, Stein was able to capture a subtle perspective of African-Americans and their lifestyles from a peripheral view.

Stein also acknowledges their outfits, postures and personalities by getting close with his objects and forming a bond, which tell a story throughout the environment of Harlem over 23 years. His goal was to have his subjects make eye contact with the camera and that the people to be as natural as possible.

Stein also discussed his career and attributed his success to his  dedication for the art and his thrill for interacting with people.

“Self-expression is the best way stay motivated,” he told students.

Harlem Street Portraits will be on display in the gallery through Feb. 26.
