Thursday night, Live on the Green once again took over the steps of Nashville’s courthouse for their third August concert series.
Typically, the night’s opener performs to a mild, tame crowd, but that wasn’t the case for Nashville-based The Weeks. The southern rock band drew a generous crowd with a variety of music from their catalog, with tracks from their latest album “Easy” and fan-favorites from their claim to fame “Comeback Cadillac.”
After performing an hour-long set, lead singer Cyle Barnes thanked the crowd for their support before sharing his plan for the evening: to get drunk in the crowd and enjoy the rest of the night’s shows.
Following The Weeks came Portugal. The Man, perhaps the most anticipated performance of the night, despite not having the coveted headliner spot. Portugal. The Man has been performing since the early 2000’s but only recently became popular due to hit “Feel It Still.”
They kicked off their set with a rendition of “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2,” before transitioning into “Purple Yellow Red and Blue.”
Portugal commanded the crowd, with frontman John Gourley providing smooth vocals for the set, performing “Feel It Still” twice: once at the beginning of the show and as the set’s final track. Even the second time around, the crowd was… feeling it still.
The third and final band to perform at Live on the Green on August 28 was the night’s headliner Spoon, a band from Austin, Texas, that has been recording since 1994.
Spoon’s lively frontman, Britt Daniel, maintained the excitement of the crowd throughout their set with energetic and enthusiastic dancing. The band’s setlist included both old and new crowd-pleasers from the band’s discography, including “The Beast and Dragon, Adored,” “Inside Out,” “Don’t You Evah” and “Hot Thoughts.”
“I loved the fact that the singer was really on point and had control of the moment,” said MTSU sophomore recording industry major Christian Balderas. “The whole band had great chemistry and stage presence.”
As the headliner for the night, Spoon achieved an atmosphere of intense musicianship tempered with a personable and casual stage presence. Their overwhelmingly entertaining set was the cherry on top of a beautiful day with great music.
