Lady Raider standout forward Alex Johnson has received yet another preseason award, as the Conference USA league office announced on Thursday that Johnson was voted C-USA Preseason Player of the Year.

The award is voted on by the 14 head coaches from around the conference.

Johnson has received a lot of recognition during her first two years with the Lady Raiders. As a sophomore, she earned First-Team All-Conference honors, and she was also voted C-USA Freshman of the Year for the 2015-16 season.

Although Johnson has been heavily decorated, she has remained humble throughout her career.

“I am really appreciative of this recognition because there are so many talented players throughout C-USA,” Johnson said.

Head coach Rick Insell knows that Johnson is good, but she has room to up her game.

“Alex (Johnson) is not as great of a rebounder as we would like,” Insell said. “That’s one of the things we’ve been working on her with.”

Johnson may not have reached her full potential rebounding-wise, but as far as offensive output goes, she is one of the nation’s best. Last season, she ranked second in C-USA and 17th in the country in scoring when she averaged 20.2 points per game.

After scoring 687 points last season, she reached the 1,000 point club only as a sophomore. That made her the fastest player in program history to reach that mark.

Johnson and the Lady Raiders see their first action on Sunday when they host Tennessee Wesleyan at 3 p.m. in the Murphy Center.
