This past Saturday, local businesses and community members participated in Kappa Delta’s “Wing Fling”, which is the sorority’s largest annual philanthropic event.
Proceeds raised at this year’s “Wing Fling” event will be donated to Prevent Child Abuse America and The Family Center, both national and local organizations that aid healthy family development. The fundraiser invited local restaurants and Greek Organizations to provide food for the event, which last year pulled in close to 2,500 people and a record $26,000.
Kacey Roberts, President of the MTSU chapter of Kappa Delta, believes that “Wing Fling” does more than just raise funds for the promoted organizations.
“We love how much community involvement there is,” Roberts said. “It brings a lot of the locals together.”
At $10 a ticket, the all-you-can-eat wing buffet featured such venues as Jefferson’s, Slick Pig BBQ, Wing Zone and Deezie’s Hot Chicken and has been a local attraction for the last 13 years.
This year, a few Kappa Delta alumnae hosted their own table to assist in the proceedings.
“We have a lot more businesses this year,” Jennifer Waite, a 2014 MTSU graduate, said. “This is the biggest fundraiser every year for [Kappa Delta], but this isn’t about us – this is about Prevent Child Abuse of America.”
The Wing Eating Contest has become a staple for the annual event, pitting attendees against one another to see who can finish a plate of hot wings the fastest. Braxton Churchwell finished his plate first in a minute and thirty seconds, though all of the contenders weren’t very far behind.
Finally, after most attendees had tasted what each table offered, votes were cast for the best wings at the event. Jefferson’s won the People’s Choice Restaurant Wings, while Phi Delta Theta won the Fraternity Division and Alpha Omicron Pi was awarded the Sorority Division crown. Judges Choice awards in their respective divisions went to Deezie’s Hot Chicken, Phi Kappa Tau and Alpha Omicron Pi.
