The sun was shining and crawfish were boiling at the MTSU Alpha Tau Omega chapter’s second annual Crawfish Boil on the Murphy Center lawn on Saturday.
All proceeds from the event went toward Global Brigades, an on-campus student organization that goes on medical mission trips to countries in need of assistance.
“Not only do we get to help the people in third-world countries that really do need help in medical attention and support, but it’s also good for the students here because they get to get that experience of going and serving in those countries that otherwise they would never get to travel to,” said Ramsey Ferguson, the president of MTSU’s Alpha Tau Omega chapter.
Attendees were treated to a wholesome meal of boiled Cajun-spiced crawfish, corn and potatoes.
The crawfish, provided by the Louisiana Crawfish Company, were boiled in one of two large boilers at the event. Several Alpha Tau Omega members took turns preparing the food at the event.
The food was placed at large “eating tables,” where visitors could gather around and eat together. There was a large barrel in the middle of each eating table where attendees could throw away any leftover crawfish shells.
Armond Harris was one of the event’s attendees. He had attended last year’s crawfish boil as well.
“I mean, seriously, all you had to do is just say there’s crawfish, and I was going to be here. Last year was really good, too. It’s been a great event both years so far,” Harris said.
Jeffrey Young was another attendee at the crawfish boil. He was attending the event with his dad this year.
“Their crawfish last year was really good. So, I’d expect the same thing this year,” Young said.
Kelly Taylor gave free samples of Cheerwine soft drinks to event attendees at the Cheerwine booth.
“My favorite part about going to the Crawfish boil is seeing everybody break open the crawfish,” Taylor said.
There were Cornhole boards, and many attendees used the open space for throwing footballs. Music was also played live by several local artists at the event.
