With seminal icons like Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix and Otis Redding having solidified their places in music history and artists like D’Angelo, Solange and Kendrick Lamar carving out their own legacies today, there’s no shortage of remarkable contributions from black musicians to be recognized not only this month, but the other 11 of the year as well. In celebration of Black History Month, we’ve compiled a handful of tracks from some of the greatest black artists in a number of different genres. With these classic and contemporary hits that span across the past century into today, you’ll find a great deal of excellent music to appreciate throughout the rest of February below.
