Country music hits blared through MTSU’s Livestock Center Thursday night as the backdrop for the Dairy Science Club’s bi-annual line-dancing event.
With an entry fee of $5, the night offered students and community members the opportunity to practice their country line-dance skills, and learn some new moves. The organization also provided refreshments for the attendees to enjoy in between songs.
The club’s president, senior pre-veterinary major Calle Shwani, and secretary, senior photography major Kylie Hunter, led the group in instruction for several classic line dances. They demonstrated the moves to each song first, then increased the tempo as the group became comfortable with each step.
“We only partially do this as a fundraising event,” Shwani said. “It’s mostly just a time for people to come together and have fun!”
Around 20 people attended the event, many of them dressed in cowboy hats and boots—a common pairing for the activity.
Attendees grape-vined and two-stepped to country music classics, including “Neon Moon” by Brooks & Dunn and “Country Girl (Shake It for Me)” by Luke Bryan. Many of those who attended had never line-danced before, learning as a group how to move to the beat and memorize the steps.
Olivia Scott, a Murfreesboro native who works at the University Writing Center, attended the event with her mother, both of whom had little experience with line dancing.
“I’ve never been line-dancing before, but I brought my mom because I thought it’d be fun,” Scott said. “It’s definitely a workout.”
The Dairy Science Club began hosting its line-dancing event in April of 2025, followed by similar events in October and January. Some of these dances feature instruction from Dairy Science Club alumni and music provided by professional DJs.
In addition to this lively event, the club also visits elementary schools to teach local children about dairy science and assists with several livestock judging events and competitions.
