The Blue Raiders (4-8-1, 2-4 C-USA) traveled Sunday night to West Virginia to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd (4-6-3, 2-3-1 C-USA). It was a breath of fresh air when the final buzzer sounded as Middle Tennessee ended their four-game losing streak with a 2-0 win.
The shutout win was only MTSU’s second of the season, the last coming against Jacksonville State on Aug. 19.
The Blue Raiders started out slow Sunday and failed to score the entire first half. But Middle Tennessee turned things around in the second half as freshman Salera Jordan and senior Angie Lai both scored within 10 minutes of one another. The quick strike proved to be more than enough to put Marshall away.
Middle Tennessee’s aggressiveness was key in the final 45 minutes. The team took twice as many shots in the second half (8) as compared to the first (4).
Sophomore goalkeeper Celeste Bernard had another solid outing in her second straight start, recording four saves.
The Blue Raiders will look to build on this win in their next home contest against Rice University. With the season coming to a close, MTSU needs to ride a positive wave into the Conference-USA tournament. The matchup is scheduled for Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
