The MTSU Student Government Association is competing against every Conference-USA school in order to see who can raise the most donations in a food drive ending November 6.
Becca Seul, academic advisor in charge of the service, hopes the C-USA food drive, which began Thursday, will spread awareness among campus and the community as the proceeds will go directly into the MTSU food pantry.
The food pantry began in 2012 due to growing number of homelessness amongst students, Seul said.
”We had students coming to us saying they were going to class hungry and couldn’t focus, so we would do what we could to help them,” Seul said.
Seul says the pantry has served more than 900 students and the campus response has grown, but she hopes others will donate and show their support.
“The need has been growing faster than the donations have been coming in, that’s why we’re trying to do as much as we can to keep the donations up,” Seul said.
Students are encouraged to donate non-perishable food to the MTSU One Stop where it will be stored into the food pantry for students in need of help. This includes canned foods, oatmeal, water, crackers, peanut butter and pop-tarts. Students can also donate online at http://www.mtsu.edu/foodpantry.
“We have students that stay here that don’t go home for Christmas and they need food while they’re here, so for us we want to make sure that pantry is stocked for the holidays,” says Seul.
