Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam selected Knoxville attorney Dwight E. Tarwater on Wednesday to be his new general counsel.

The 59-year-old replaces Herbert Slatery who left the administration last month to become the state’s attorney general.

Tarwater currently practices law in Knoxville in the law firm he helped begin in 1987. He has vast courtroom experience, having tried cases locally, across the state of Tennessee, and in several other states.

Tarwater will start in the governor’s office on Dec. 8.
