“At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can.”

Frida Kahlo

Women’s History Month was created in 1987 to honor women’s contributions to American History. It’s during this month that we celebrate the women of our world, country, city, town, and lives, both past and present.

Whether we realize it or not, we all have important women in our life, and it’s important to show them the appreciation they deserve. Because of women, we have a lot to be thankful for.

Our history, both in Murfreesboro and within the walls of Middle Tennessee State University, is full of influential and important women that deserve to be appreciated and remembered.

Middle Tennessee State University has a rich history of powerful and famous women that have attended its campus.

Lady A’s co-lead singer, Hillary Scott attended MTSU.

Actress and singer, Sondra Locke was also a MTSU alumni.

Vernice Armour was the first African American female naval aviator in the Marine Corps and the first female combat pilot in the U.S. Armed Forces, and she graduated from MTSU in 1997.

MTSU has certainly been honored by the attendance of many amazing, strong, and influential women in its history. As MTSU students, we have the honor of walking the same halls and graduating from the same establishment as so many amazing women before us.

These amazing women lived in the same city we live, work, and learn in. We can take pride in knowing that our town’s history is so full of amazing women, and it is home to so many more amazing women as well.

It’s amazing to think of the lives these women led and how they contribute to our history as women, students and as American citizens. History is being made now as well, as we continue to see so many other wonderful and powerful women making their way in the world and making changes for the better.

For the first time we have a female Vice-President, who also happens to be the first African American and Asian-American Vice-President.

The list of incredible women from Tennessee, America and the world is endless, and we can feel very fortunate to have a lot of those women alive today.

We are witnessing history being made for women everywhere, and it’s only right that we take the time- a whole month in fact- to celebrate it.

Make sure you take the time to celebrate the women in your life, because I can almost guarantee that you wouldn’t be where you are today without them.

“The success of every woman should be the inspiration to another. We should raise each other up. Make sure you’re very courageous: be strong, be extremely kind, and above all be humble.”
