Tips on how to lobby lawmakers were shared with the Murfreesboro Branch of the American Association of University Women in MTSU’s Sam Ingram building on Tuesday evening.

The meeting was called to order at 5:45 p.m. and was led by Joyce McDaniel and Jane Grigor Ferrell of the Ferrell-McDaniel Company in Nashville. Approximately thirty women attended the meeting, themed “Tips of the Trade: Lobbying the Hill and the Congressional Delegation.”

McDaniel and Ferrell began by sharing the personal experiences that led them to their involvement with the legislative branch, campaigning and the creation of their political action committee development firm. The duo then provided tips on how to properly contact state legislatures, what information to provide and how to become active within the legislative system. They also urged attendees to not only become advocates for candidates but also work for the candidates they support, to register to vote and to vote regularly.

Although they hold very different political views, McDaniel and Ferrell are able to put their differences aside and work well together.

“Jane and I don’t always agree on a lot of issues, but I can tell you one thing – on women’s issues, we do,” McDaniel noted.

While the AAUW is concerned with advancing equity for women, members also focus on current legislative events. The most recent focus of the group is to work to support academic state standards and formulate opinions on common core.

The next meeting will be a coalition of the AAUW and the Women Political Collaborative. This luncheon will occur in Nashville at a location and time to be announced on March 4 and focus on sexual assaults on campus.
