MTSU’s Annual Convocation Welcomed New and Returning Students

MTSU students and faculty gathered in Murphy Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon to introduce new students to the university.

The annual celebration, typically geared towards incoming freshman and transfer students, was also a belated induction to last year’s freshman class whose convocation was canceled due to rain.

Jay Allison, the guest speaker this year and editor of both the 2014 and 2015 summer reading books, “This I Believe” and “This I Believe II,” spoke to students about the importance of their college career. Allison later signed copies of both books for students of the classes of 2018 and 2019.

SGA President Lindsey Pierce also spoke, urging the students to “Get involved, become a part of this amazing community” and welcomed students to “this Blue Raider family.”

Students and families are encouraged to come out and kick-off each school year at convocation in what vice provost of student affairs, Dr. Deb Sells, calls “the opposite book-end to graduation.”
