Friday night may have showcased concerts all around Murfreesboro, but none could quite compare to the show at Media Rerun, with performances from Allison Young, Chloe Kimes and Nordista Freeze. To no surprise, each of these artists delivered energetic sets inside the eclectic used-media shop.
Young opened the show with her crystal tone floating through the venue as she played acoustic originals. Her second piece, “Spitfire,” was written in honor of her little sister. “Because that’s what she is,” she said with a light laugh.
Young brought a blues vibe filled with romanticism and beauty to engage listeners throughout her set. For Young, playing without her usual jazz combo provided a different sound, but it took nothing away from her performance.
Her voice not only carried a wonderful vibrato, but when she whistled, she took the audience back a few decades, in an experience only describable as ethereal.
When Kimes took the stage, you could tell by her gracious smile how excited she was to be playing for the modest audience.
“I know there are a lot of shows going on in Murfreesboro, but it means a lot to me that you all are here tonight,” she said.
Her set consisted of originals like “Real Good Love,” Medicine Man” and “Time,” played alongside Samuel Varughese on guitar.
She sang with a strong, passionate voice as she warned, “Time runs out and nothin’ stays the same.”
Kimes also covered a Joni Mitchell classic, “California,” and closed the show with her recent release, “I’ll Be Going,” available on all streaming platforms.
The final performer of the evening was the electric Nordista Freeze. He set his stage with a row of LaCroix cans flanked by two identical portraits.
Freeze opened his set on solo electric guitar, with a YouTube video of Disney’s “Mousercise” playing silently in the background.
He played songs from his latest album, “Cosmic Haus,” as well as covering “Do You Wanna Dance?” by The Beach Boys. He closed out his energetic solo set with the song “Florida.”
Between songs, Freeze told curious stories of meeting Brian Wilson at an airport, having lunch at Chipotle with NRBQ and how he played an impressive 127 shows in last year alone.
To close the show, Kimes once again thanked the audience for attending and told them to look for more show announcements from each artist.
