With one swing off the bat of Western Kentucky University outfielder Cael Frost, it didn’t just secure the series — it handed Middle Tennessee its first home series loss of the season.
The 9-8 defeat tightens the Blue Raiders’ margin of error, with just two Conference USA series remaining. With the series loss, the Blue Raiders dropped to 10-14 in CUSA play, slotting MTSU in the eighth spot in the conference standings behind Kennesaw State and Western Kentucky.
“In a game like that where you lose by one run and have the tying run on second, you can look back at a million things you could’ve done differently,” catcher Tyler Minnick said.
CUSA Picture Tightens
The Blue Raiders’ 10-14 CUSA record gives Middle Tennessee sole possession of eighth place, just inside the nine-team cutoff for the conference tournament. With series wins over the weekend, Western Kentucky and Kennesaw State University now have a one-win cushion over MTSU in the CUSA standings.
Pressure also builds from below. Sam Houston State University sits one game back, while New Mexico State University trails MTSU by two games. Middle Tennessee’s next conference opponent, Florida International University, remains within striking distance. The Panthers sit three games behind the Blue Raiders
With a two-game difference between sixth place and ninth place, the Blue Raiders will need to take care of business against FIU to remain in postseason position.
Final Stretch Begins
Before the CUSA tournament on May 20-24 in Kennesaw, Georgia, Middle Tennessee takes the field for two conference weekend series and two midweek tuneups.
May 8-10 at Florida International
Florida International has struggled in CUSA play this season, posting a 6-6 home record and a 0-12 road record. FIU ranks bottom in the CUSA in batting average (.240), hits (379) and runs scored (270).
The best bat among the Panthers is infielder Cooper Rasmussen. The junior slashes
.292/.909/.534 while sharing the home run tally with 11 long balls so far this season.
On the mound, the Panthers rank 11th out of 12 CUSA teams in average ERA with a 7.43 mark. FIU allows the most earned runs in the conference with 342 and averages five walks per game against opposing lineups.
On paper, the Blue Raiders’ offense presents clear opportunities to capitalize on a pitching staff that allows walks in bunches. With MTSU’s struggles on the road during conference play this season, the series feels like a must-win going into a series with Liberty University.
What MTSU needs to do:
Middle Tennessee likely needs to win or sweep the series to maintain control of its postseason positioning. A win provides security heading into a high-profile series against Liberty in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
May 14-16 vs Liberty
The Blue Raiders return to Reese Smith Jr. Field, facing Liberty in the regular season finale. The Flames hold an 18-6 record in CUSA play and currently hold the No. 2 spot in the conference standings.
Liberty’s strength lies on the mound, with LU boasting the second-best rotation statistically in CUSA. The Flames’ staff carries a 4.61 ERA and allows three walks per game, the fewest among CUSA pitching corps.
The Flames’ weekend rotation is filled with quality arms, with the most notable being right-handed pitcher Ben Blair, who fills the Friday role. The junior 2026 Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List nominee has been lights out for the Flames, posting a 6-3 record over 12 starts on the mound.
Blair has backed up his accolades, averaging a 3.15 ERA through 71 ⅓ innings, only walking nine batters. Offensively, LU sits in the middle of the conference, posting an overall batting percentage of .280. The strength of Liberty’s offense lies in working counts. The Flames lead CUSA in walks with 5.6 per game and subsequently rank in the top five in on-base percentage (.405).
With MTSU’s strong showing at home outside of the tight loss to WKU, the home-field advantage has been kind to Middle Tennessee this season.
What MTSU needs to do:
Liberty’s pitching staff does a great job at limiting free passes and controlling at-bats through command at the mound. With this in mind, Middle Tennessee will need to take mature at-bats and capitalize on pitches hung in the zone.
Depending on the results of the series against FIU, the Blue Raiders may need at least a series win to safely remain inside the top nine.
With the clock ticking down on the regular season, the Blue Raiders have little time to dwell on a tough loss to the Hilltoppers on Sunday.
“We competed, and we’re ready to play,” MTSU head coach Jerry Meyers said after the 9-8 loss to WKU on Sunday. “I like the way our guys responded, and we just gotta leave it at that and move on, and keep trying to get a little bit better.”
The Blue Raiders kick off the last two weeks of the regular season in Nashville, Tennessee, for a midweek matchup with Lipscomb University at Ken Dugan Field on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
