MTSU’s Homecoming Week continued with the annual Chili Cook-Off on Thursday evening.
Several student organizations, alumni and community groups competed in the cook-off with special recipes. A $5 entry fee allowed patrons to taste all the entries, play games such as corn hole, enter a giveaway and vote for a favorite chili with the proceeds benefiting Habitat for Humanity.
Entries were judged on flavor, texture and taste as well as overall presentation and school spirit in their displays.
First place in the student organization categories went to Alpha Omicron Pi, with Chi Omega and Area 2 of MTSU Housing taking second and third, respectively.
The winner of the “Alumni and Friends” category was the Sigma Chi Alumni Chapter and the community winner was Aspen Heights, who also the overall winner of the night.
Homecoming Week continued on Friday night with the Raiderstock Music Festival and the Homecoming Parade, tailgate and football game against the University of Alabama Birmingham on Saturday.

I actually enjoy the chili cookout MT has during homecoming. For two years now I have been a part of SGA and have helped out during both events. I think this year was the best so far. They had a Mardi Gras theme, and had gumbo, made to perfection, and the famous New Orleans cake. Honestly I wasn’t a big fan of the cake, but the gumbo was excellent. The SGA committee even passed out free homecoming shirts. I wish throughout the event more students will come out and support, mainly students outside the organizations supporters. I understand this article was from last year chili cook off but they both went down in the books. I used to be picky when it came to eating other people’s chili, but just being able to step outside my mother’s famous chili and try something new was worth the experience. The Chili cook off should most definitely continue, although there can be a couple of changes to make the event better, and to promote it more. In the end my experience here at the chili cook off was a blast, and I cannot wait to partake in next years event.
