Nissan North America will invest $160 million into the automobile manufacturer’s Smyrna plant, building a new supplier park that will create 1,000 new jobs, according to an announcement by Governor Bill Haslam and Economic and Community Development Commissioner Randy Boyd this afternoon.
The project currently involves the construction of an “integrated logistics center” on the Smyrna campus that will be over 1.5 million square feet in size.
The project is expected to begin in late 2016 and complete in late 2017. Nissan’s Smyrna plant, which opened in 1983 and employs more than 8,400 people, has been cited as the most productive automotive plant in North America, producing nearly 650,000 vehicles per year, according to the release.
“Nissan is a valuable part of Tennessee’s past, and continues to write itself into our history,” Boyd said.
