MTSU’s own WMOT station is trading in its jazz and classical programming for an updated format of Americana music ranging from country and blues to gospel and more.

Music City Roots is integrating with the station as of September 2 and will be renamed as WMOT-FM/Roots Radio 89.5.

The station, operated from the College of Media and Entertainment on MTSU’s campus, boasts the strongest signal in the greater Nashville area.

A kickoff event for the station will be held at The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum at 11a.m. on September 2, featuring live performances and marking the beginning of the radio’s new programming.

“This will give our students the opportunity to work and learn in a vibrant professional environment and provide greater interaction with the music industry,” said Ken Paulson, dean of the College of Media and Entertainment.

The Americana genre will include several Nashville artists next to new and old music from all over the country.

The jazz focus will continue to be preserved with the MTSU Jazz Network on WMOT’s HD channel.

Network personalities will include members of Music City Roots, the Grand Ole Opry and the Center for Popular Music at MTSU.

This shift is intended to grow the audiences and extend the outreach of both the station and the university.

This change will have no effect on 88.3 WMTS, MTSU’s student-run radio station.
