Brandon Archer, a recent MTSU graduate and football player, passed away Monday in Perry County after drowning in the Buffalo River near Lobelville, Tennessee.

Perry County EMA officials stated that they had received a call around 1 p.m. regarding a drowning.

Perry County Sheriff Nick Weems said in a statement with Fox 17 News that Archer, who had been canoeing with friends and stopped to swim, appeared to be pulled under water by a current.

Officials stated that Archer was later discovered in 9 to 10 feet of water, and believe he may have become entangled in debris as he was swept under.

Archer graduated from MTSU in August 2019, with a degree in Leisure, Sports, and Tourism Studies, and a member of the MTSU Blue Raiders football team.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned for updates.
