President Barack Obama announced a plan during a speech at Pellissippi State Community College on Friday, January 9 to provide free community college to students across the country.

Students would be required to maintain at least part-time enrollment and a 2.5 GPA in order to receive these benefits.

The president said during his speech that the plan would be presented to Congress next month.

“We made high school the norm and sent a generation to college on the G.I. Bill,” Obama said on Friday. “We invested in one of our crown jewels in this country and that’s higher education.”
