Going into Music in the Middle, I was excited to discover tons of new artists from the area and independent acts from across the globe.
On top of excellent sets from The 1975, SWIMM, Motive and more, here’s a few of the best acts I saw at the festival.
Goodbye June
Goodbye June’s set was one of the best rock shows of the event. The Nashville based band played a solid show that showcased the band’s southern rock roots, as well as the lead singer’s excellent range, which was reminiscent of Axl Rose at points.
They’re definitely one of the artists from the area to watch from here on out.
Late Night Alumni
Friday night headliners Late Night Alumni’s live set was upbeat and danceable. The female vocalist’s voice works great which the atmospheric house beats on their tracks.
While a little more variation from their studio recordings was desired, they attracted a large crowd and got them dancing the night away.
Thelma and the Sleaze
One of the best surprises of the weekend came from Thelma and the Sleaze’s late night set Friday. Playing at the Lunar Forest stage, they captivated the crowd with their mix of grunge sound, punk attitude and sex appeal.
These factors mixed with solid instrumentation and Janis Joplin-esc vocals led to one of the heaviest sets of the weekend.
Chinese Connection Dub Embassy
Even though it was burning up Saturday afternoon, the chilliest spot on the farm was at the Huff n Puff stage for Chinese Connection Dub Embassy’s set.
The reggae band played a great set that left the crowd feeling nothing but good vibes. It even included an excellent cover of A-ha’s 80’s classic, “Take on Me.” Other highlights included a cover of the The Dramatics’ “Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get” and the original track “Heavy Meditation.”
