Editor’s note: This story contained factually incorrect information, and Sidelines is retracting this article as of Feb. 27, 2026.
This article contained information from a source that was not accurate, and this article, as a result, framed incorrect information. Sidelines regrets this error.
The original statement in the story that “anyone who isn’t under Federal Work-Study can’t get a job working” at the Todd Art Gallery is factually incorrect. The department has a limited budget for student workers, according to Mike Davis, the strategic communications manager for the College of Liberal Arts, but students not under the Federal Work-Study have been and continue to be employed at the Todd Art Gallery.
Only one student’s experience was discussed, and therefore does not accurately represent the operations of the entire department, nor does it accurately portray the scope of the situation.
This story also only included budget concerns as a reason for not hiring students. However, “scheduling needs, reliability, and the ability to fulfill established job responsibilities” are also factors in hiring students, according to Davis.
During the process of corrections, Sidelines interviewed Jimmy Mumford, the department chair of art and design.
“We appreciate Sidelines taking the time to review and ultimately retract the article,” Davis said. “Student employment decisions within the Department of Art and Design are based on multiple factors, including funding availability, operational needs, scheduling, and the ability to fulfill job responsibilities. Federal Work-Study status is not a hiring requirement at the Todd Art Gallery, nor any other department in the College of Liberal Arts, and non–Federal Work-Study students have been and continue to be employed when funding permits.
“We remain committed to providing meaningful hands-on opportunities for students while responsibly managing the resources allocated to us.”
