MTSU’s annual Student Government Association Fight Song Competition was held Thursday night in the Student Union Commons.
Teams of student organizations were asked to combine costumes, dances, songs and chants into a choreographed routine that must include MTSU’s Fight Song in the performance. To go along with the Week of Welcome theme of “Welcome to the Big Leagues,” teams were assigned Major League Baseball teams to use as a design basis and were required to sing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” in their routines.
However, the teams, which were primarily made up of Greek organizations, spent minimal time reciting the required songs and relied mainly on Blue Raider-themed reworkings of popular and classic songs such as Disclosure’s “Latch,” Jason Derulo’s “Wiggle” and Dr. Dre’s “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang.”
First place went to the team of Chi Omega, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Kappa Tau and Pi Kappa Phi, who performed a Western/Texas Ranger’s themed routine, complete with an an appearance by Woody from Toy Story.
The team of Alpha Delta Pi and Phi Mu Alpha placed second with an exhilarating, step-heavy performance.
The team of Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Gamma Rho and Sigma Chi placed third with avid support by their fraternity brothers and sorority sisters.
“The whole point of this [is] to get people excited about [Greek] recruitment, and MTSU and [Week of Welcome,]” said Sarah Jameson, a member of Chi Omega. “And I think that we really portrayed that in our show.”
