Ancient music inspired by the landscapes of rural China filled the lobby of James E. Walker Library on Thursday afternoon.

Tianyi Wei, a senior mathematics major from Beijing, China, performed songs on the guzheng, a large, Chinese string instrument dating back to around 400 B.C. Theevent was hosted by the library in conjunction with International Affairs and the Confucius Institute as part of MTSU’s International Education Week.

The goal of Wei’s performance, one of several “street performances” hosted by Walker Library throughout the year, was to bring a unique element of Chinese culture to the attention of MTSU students.

“I want to introduce a traditional Chinese instrument to people who have maybe never heard of it before,” Wei said.

According to the Walker Library News blog, Wei has been playing the guzheng since she was six years old and enjoys “the peace and tranquility it brings to herself and others.”
