The documentary Reflect, Reclaim, Rejoice: Preserving the Gift of Black Sacred Music was shown in the Student Union Theater to kick off MTSU’s 2015 Black History Month.
The film is based around the roots of African-Americans’ ancestral past and learning to preserve the customs and traditions of African slaves through the means of song. 12 Years A Slave star Alfre Woodard narrated the film and gave the background on why these hymnals and gospels were sung by the African slaves. The documentary also conveyed why people still choose to sing them in the present day.
Reflect, Reclaim, Rejoice was written, produced and directed by MTSU’s graduate student Henri Giles. Giles’s documentary was won Best Cultural Documentary at the 29th Mid-South Emmys.
