The MTSU softball team had two rematches on Saturday, taking on both St. Mary’s and Cal Poly once again.
GAME ONE:
In game one of the day, the Blue Raiders knocked off St. Mary’s by a score of 8-0. The Raiders got on the board early in the first and then were able to score in four of the next five innings as well.
Precious Birdsong led the team in this one, going 4-4 from the plate with a triple and picking up three RBI. Lexi Cushing was also a leading hitter, going 2-2 from the plate including a solo homer in the second inning.
Cori Jennings picked up her fifth win on the season in the circle, throwing a complete game while striking out six and allowing only two hits.
GAME TWO:
In game two of the day versus Cal Poly, MTSU found themselves in a tight one that took extra innings to decide.
Cal Poly got on the board first in the third inning, but MT was able to later tie things up in the fifth, thanks to a string of hits off of the bats of Birdsong, Cushing and Harris.
This game remained tied all the way until the eighth inning when the international tiebreaker rule was put into effect. The Blue Raiders were unable to push any runs across in the top half of the eighth. Cal Poly was able to capitalize on their runner who started the inning off at second base, thanks to a walk off RBI single. The eventual score gave the Mustangs a 2-1 victory.
Megan Chocallo, though striking out two, took the loss in the circle, making her 0-2 in the early season.
WHAT’S NEXT?
The Blue Raiders will take the field one last time in the ShareSLO Mustang Classic Sunday morning at 10 AM when they take on Sacred Heart.
