MTSU’s Black History Month Committee started off the month with free cake and information on upcoming events that will be held throughout the rest of February today in the Student Union.
“The cake cutting kicks it off. It lets people become aware that this month is Black History month and it brings us students together to celebrate the heritage of black history,” said Jonathan Bingham, a senior studying Organizational Studies.
The cake featured Martin Luther King Jr. as the centerpiece along with other figures in the African-American community represented by their respective symbols. These decorations included a streetlight, symbolizing Garrett Morgan, inventor of one of the first traffic signals; peanuts symbolizing George Washington Carver with his creation of peanut butter; a bus symbolizing Rosa Parks and an astronaut symbolizing Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African-American female to travel in space.
Daniel Green, the director of Intercultural and Diversity Affairs at MTSU, was leading the event, and he discussed how the cake cutting was supposed to bring attention to the events happening throughout the month.
Some of the events Green highlighted are the “Just A Month” debate on Thurs., “Color the Runway Fashion Show,” a journey through African-American fashion trends on Fri. and keynote speaker Terrance J from BET’s “106 & Park” and “E! News” on Wed. Feb. 22.
“I am really excited about the Unity Luncheon. It’s going to be on February 16, and it is an opportunity to connect the MTSU community with individuals out in the Middle Tennessee community. We will be recognizing 11 unsung heroes. Those are senior citizens that have done something in the community and it’s just an opportunity for us to recognize them,” said La’Endia Buchanan, co-chair of the Black History Month Committee.
The cake cutting was just the start of the Black History Month celebration with over 20 events happening throughout the month here at MTSU.
