MTSU students and Exit Realty members assisted Habitat for Humanity in Student Union Commons Thursday in building the first floor of a two-story, five-bedroom home for Murfreesboro community member Kelly Stacey.

Habitat for Humanity members had help from 50 students from student organizations and Greek Life, 15 Exit Realty members and 15 Habitat volunteers. Volunteers assisted in finishing 85-90% of the first floor of the home, which will be set up and completed on a slab in Habitat’s Legacy Point subdivision.

“Today was very productive,” said Habitat construction director Steve Arnold.

Arnold has been with Habitat for four years and said he takes pride in using his passion for building homes to leave a lasting impact on the community.

“I’ve been building homes for 33 years, and the lord has blessed me with a talent that I’d like to share,” said Arnold.

The Office of Student Organizations and Services partners with Habitat Humanity every year to provide students with community impact and engagement opportunities. Volunteers and Habitat members take part in the builds with the purpose of spreading philanthropy in the community.

“This is the best organization I’ve ever been associated with because every penny you donate goes into somebody’s house for a needed family,” said Larry Powell, Habitat volunteer of 13 years. “It’s rewarding to go to the dedications and see those families when they get their little sets of keys because they’ve never owned a home and always rented or lived in other places.”

Another volunteer, Chris Kreutzcamp, started volunteering with Habitat for Humanity with a love for helping others.

“I’ve always loved helping people and had a lot of people help me out in the past, and this is a good way to pay for it,” said Kreutzcamp.

Sophomore Josie Northcymut was ecstatic to volunteer on behalf of her student organization, the Nutrition and Dietetics Association, and encourages students to “get out and volunteer” when future opportunities arise.
