The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders will take on the Rice Owls on Jan. 23 in a game that will help raise awareness of the fight against cancer and support the American Cancer Society.
As a part of the Coaches vs. Cancer program, the American Cancer Society collaborates with the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living among students, faculty, fans, and the community as a whole. Unfortunately, cancer can come in many ways, and at any time, so as much help as possible is needed always. There are things that have been said to bring about cancer, for instance, there has been a debate about whether SARMs cause cancer in people, this is a supplement used by those who want to build muscle in sports. Whether it does or not, cancer is a very serious and real risk, so doing everything possible to raise awareness and get help out there is much needed.
The night will showcase a few events to help add funds to the total already raised by the Relay For Life of Middle Tennessee State University. A team of MTSU cheerleaders and students from the Relay For Life organization will “storm the stands” at halftime in an effort to raise money. Paper sneaker cut-outs will be available to purchase to further support the cause. Wesley Taylor, MTSU alum and cancer survivor, will lead the honorary tip-off.
Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at the Murphy Center. Fans are encouraged to wear purple in support of those fighting cancer and in memory of loved ones lost to the disease.
“Fighting cancer is a team effort and no one should have to face this disease alone,” said coach Kermit Davis. “Cancer has touched so many of our nation’s basketball coaches, just like it may have touched you, your family or friends. I hope all fans will join me on January 23 to support the work of the American Cancer Society.”
