According to the Chattanooga Times Free-Press, the Tennessee Board of Regents are restructuring how remedial classes are handled at Tennessee colleges.

The new procedures will affect math and writing classes at community colleges and universities.

Under the new program, freshman who are not working at a university level will be allowed to simultaneously enroll in for-credit and learning support classes. Previously unprepared freshman were required to pass a non-credit remedial course prior to enrolling in college-level courses.

The new program was put in place after many college students weren’t earning the college credits necessary for graduation because they were stuck in remedial classes.

Brittney Davidson, writing center director at Chattanooga State Community College, told Chattanooga Times Free-Press that college students have become more motivated knowing they can earn college credit.
