Netflix added How To Get Away With Murder’s first season to its lineup, and it couldn’t have arrived a moment sooner. Newbie fans and viewers will need to binge watch it to understand season two’s premiere, “It’s Time to Move On,” and even then the ending will leave them wondering what they’ve stepped into.
Dr. Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) and her law school interns Connor Walsh (Jack Falahee), Michaela Pratt (Aja Naomi King), Asher Millstone (Matt McGorry), Laurel Castillo (Karla Souza) and Wes Gibbons (Alfred Enoch) are all back and ready to raise hell.
Wes, distraught over the disappearance of his girlfriend, Rebecca Sutter, is finding it hard to keep his head in the game. Keating, an active defense attorney, takes on cases and employs her interns to help her. Her new clients are a pair of adoptive siblings accused by their Aunt—who was murdered under suspicious circumstances—of killing their wealthy parents.
As per HTGAWM’s custom, each season employs the use of flashbacks to tell parts of the ending throughout the season. From that, we know that Annalise will be shot and left bleeding on the floor of her client’s mansion, while a troubled Wes runs across a manicured lawn.
Before that can make any sense—and it won’t—last season left us with several murders and their fallouts.
Lila, the pretty redhead who had an affair and got pregnant with Keating’s husband, was found dead in a water tank. She had been strangled by Frank Delfino (Charlie Weber), Annalise’s trusted employee, who killed her on Sam’s behalf because he “owed” him. And then there was Sam, who Wes bludgeoned to death for trying to strangle his girlfriend, who believed that Sam killed Lila, with all his fellow interns in attendance.
After spending the last half of the season covering up her student’s crime, Annalise goes from being a suspect in her husbands murder to framing her lover, after which she calls on her attorney ex-girlfriend, played by Famke Jannsen, to take his case. Tonight’s bombshell of a premiere showed us more about Keating’s bisexuality as she made out with her old flame and danced with Wes in a nightclub, an attempt on her part to show her interns a good time.
The only thing longer than HTGAWM’s title was the time it took us to find out who killed Lila. Rebecca’s murderer, on the other hand, is revealed in the first episode of the season 2 premiere. In the last minute, Frank and Annalise found Lila’s best friend, the only innocent one of the entire group, suffocated and hidden behind a staircase in the Keating’s campus house basement. In a series of unfortunate events in the five episodes that finished off the spring season, Rebecca came under suspicion for her best friend’s death.
The first episode veered off of the series’ usual path of exploring each character’s life in every episode by focusing on Frank and Annalise’s efforts to find Rebecca’s killer. They start to suspect Laurel and Wes.
But in one chilling flashback we learn that Bonnie Winterbottom (Liza Weil), Annalise’s assistant attorney, was sure of Rebecca’s guilt and sought to fix the problem, gagging her and tying a plastic bag over her head. Annalise now has to hide Rebecca’s death and her killer from Wes, whom she has developed a strange attraction to.
There’s no question the craziness of Shonda Rhimes’ How To Get Away With Murder in season one—the ‘Keating Five’ carrying Keating’s dead husband out of his house on the college’s busiest night of the year, anyone? But while the show’s plot was always convoluted, that never reduced its appeal. Season two will be no exception.
