President of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority chapter at MTSU, Anna Flora, created a GoFundMe campaign to show support and appreciation for Diana Boyett, a beloved MTSU custodial staff member, whose son died.

According to to the campaign page, Boyett has been “tending” to the six sorority houses on MTSU’s Greek Row for the past two school years.

“Anyone who knows her knows that she is just such a sweet person,” Flora said. “She always goes out of her way to say ‘Hello’ to me and the other girls. Even if we were just sitting down, doing homework, she would always stop what she was doing and say, ‘How are you doing?’ or ‘I hope you all are having a good day.’”

Boyett’s son, Hunter Northcutt, died on Sept. 18 after a battle with Leukemia. Flora said that she first heard the news after Leslie Merritt, the MTSU director of fraternity and sorority life, sent an email to sorority members.

“I know that I was pretty impacted by it, and I shared the news with the girls living in the (Alpha Omicron Pi) House currently,” Flora said. “They were equally as impacted … When we found out it happened, we wanted to do something a little bit more for (Boyett) than to just send flowers.”

According to Flora, when sorority representatives reached out to Boyett and asked what they could do to help, Boyett said that a memorial scholarship was being created in Northcutt’s name. Boyett asked the women of Alpha Omicron Pi to assist in raising funds for the future scholarship.

As of now, the GoFundMe campaign has raised $265 in eight days, and all money collected will be sent to Boyett to add to the scholarship fund.

“We know that the scholarship will impact somebody’s life is such a positive way, and we know that it will help someone in a similar situation,” said Alicia White, the Alpha Omicron Pi chapter adviser. “(It will help) someone who has had a roadblock or a difficulty in their life. It will make their life much easier down the road.”

There are limited details about how the scholarship will be instituted. However, Boyett did state that it will benefit students who are pursuing higher education.

“(The scholarship) is available to any high school (student) preparing for college,” Boyett said. “I hope it helps anyone wanting to better their life and never look back.”

Flora said that she wants all MTSU sorority and fraternity members involved in raising money for the scholarship.

“Even if they didn’t know (Boyett), and even if (Boyett) wasn’t in charge of their residence hall, I’m sure that they have been impacted by an exceptional custodial staff member from MTSU,” Flora said. “We want to spread the GoFundMe as much as possible to raise the most funds that we can.”
