It’s not a secret that college is expensive. From tuition and books to housing and food, the bills only add up, which is why students are always looking for new ways to make money. Unfortunately, most people don’t have a lot of extra time in their busy class schedules. Even if they do have some spare hours in their busy schedules, there aren’t a lot of options that involve anything fun or relevant to their field of study. However, there’s an exciting new opportunity out there for those pursuing a career in art and design: The K!ck Condiments scholarship.
K!ck was launched in April 2017 and currently offers three sauces: fire-roasted tomato BBQ, creamy onion horseradish and sriracha aioli. The company was founded by college friends Doug Kongkondrath and Sylvia Stein, who wanted to bring fun and flare to condiments.
Both of the founders graduated from NYU, so they understand the struggle of having to pay for tuition. They implemented a scholarship program through their company in order to help students as much as they can. The company is based in New York, which is an epicenter for creativity and art. So, it isn’t a surprise to hear that’s where the premise of the scholarship contest came from. The founders want to utilize the talents of and shine a spotlight on student artists.
“We were looking at the condiment category and everything is just so corporate and traditional, and we thought there was an opportunity to inject some fun into condiments,” cofounder Kongkondrath said.
The purpose of the contest is to find a student artist to design the label for an upcoming flavor. In order to enter, the contestant must be at least 16-years-old and enrolled in a college visual arts program during the 2018 calendar year. The contestant must then create an original work of art inspired by sriracha and post it on their Instagram. The post has to tag the company and include specific hashtags.
“Everyone is an artist and everyone is creative. We are very open. We aren’t looking for a portfolio, we are looking for spark and creativity,” cofounder Stein said.
This isn’t the first time the company used a young artist for the designs of their bottles. The packaging for the original sauces used the designs of a local artist.
“She (was) very young (and) just out of school. So, we gave her a platform,” Stein said. “We want each package to be different. The only thing it would have in common is creative expression.”
The cut off date to enter the contest is May 1, after which Kongkondrath and Stein will deliberate, and the winner will be announced around June 1. The winner will be awarded $1,000 and have the opportunity to work with the company on a new package design for an additional $500.
You can keep up with the company for updates on the contest on their Instagram and Facebook, and also check out their website for all of the information and official contest rules.
